Caring Hand

This was started by Wendy DeVore, a CODA. It is sponsored by Bread of Life. We try to match up an interpreter (who wants to practice sign language with a deaf person) with a person stuck at home or nursing home and a deaf person introduce them. They will entertain the shut-ins for one to two hours and one to two times a month.

DCHW (Deaf Community Health Worker)

Anita Buel, who is the first Deaf person to have this title, has her office at Bread of Life. She visits with Deaf patients in nursing homes, at home under Hospice and hospitals. She has a big responsibility to see that Deaf patients are respected for their culture and their medical needs. She is teaching the hearing Health Community Workers how to handle the Deaf patients.

ELDA (Evangelical Lutheran Deaf Association)

In 2008 it will be held in Minnesota. A committee is set up to make plans. Once we find a site we will give you more information.

2008 ELDA Plans

GDC (Global Deaf Connection)

They have 2 1/2 offices at Bread of Life since 1999. They focus on Deaf communities in developing countries to promote Deaf education and leadership skills through advocacy, multicultural exchange, college scholarships and mentor support. They are currently working in Jamaica, Dominion Republic and Africa (Kenya).
